Planet found at perfect spot for life -?in solar system with three suns
Scientists have found a planet about 4.5 times the mass of Earth that orbits in the heart of its star's habitable zone, with two other suns orbiting much farther away. Is there water or the potential for life? Perhaps. But the planet could also be a two-faced world of scorching sun and perpetual ice. ??
A newfound planet only 22 light-years away represents the best candidate yet for hosting liquid water on its surface, according to a team of astronomers announcing the find Thursday.

For now, however, too little is known about the planet's composition and the makeup of any atmosphere ? if it has one ? to say with confidence that water is likely to be there, researchers say. Location alone does not make for a habitable planet. Some scientists suggest that the newfound planet could be caught with one hemisphere permanently facing its star, lessening any prospects for life.
Still, the researchers note the planet's position well within the habitable zone is an encouraging first sign.
This is not the first so-called super Earth astronomers have detected in a star's habitable zone. In December, scientists with NASA's Kepler mission announced the discovery of a super Earth orbiting within its host star's habitable zone. That planet was orbiting a sun-like star, marking an important step along the path toward meeting the mission's goal of uncovering Earth-size planets orbiting within the habitable zone of sun-like stars.
But the new planet, GJ 667Cc, orbits a red dwarf ? a type of star that is much smaller, fainter, and far more common in the galaxy than sun-like stars. Given red dwarfs' prevalence, the finding suggests that the galaxy should be brimming with super Earths in habitable zones, the research team says.
The new planet's host star, GJ 667C, has about 30 percent of the sun's mass and gives off most of its radiation as infrared light. It's part of a triple-star system that also contains a pair of orange-dwarf stars. These don't come closer to GJ 667C than about 230 astronomical units, or 230 times the distance between Earth and the sun. They would be distant specks in the sky to a spacecraft orbiting the new planet.
Because the star is substantially fainter than the sun, its habitable zone is closer. GJ 677Cc orbits its red dwarf at about 0.12 astronomical units, zipping around the star once every 27.15 days.
Astrobiologists suggest red dwarfs have an important thing going for them as energy sources for life on any planets orbiting them: longevity.
Red dwarfs are dim because they are not burning their hydrogen fuel as furiously as more-massive stars. And unlike more massive stars, they have access to all of their hydrogen fuel. So they last longer than sun-like stars.
The sun boasts a respectable 10-billion year life span. For a star like GJ 677C, a life span is measured in trillions of years ? plenty of time for life to emerge and evolve many times over if conditions permit. The team estimates that GJ 667C is only about 5 billion years old.
Yet others caution that the laws of physics may conspire against the presence of liquid water on planets in an orbit like GJ 667Cc's.
The planet may be close enough to the star that, if the planet's orbit is circular, the gravitational interaction between the two objects eventually will force the planet slow its rotation until it presents the same hemisphere to the star all the time, says University of Maine astronomer Neil Comins.
Astronomers call this synchronous rotation: The planet's rotation rate matches the time it takes the planet to orbits its star. One hemisphere of the planet is permanently roasting, the other is frozen.
Even with an atmosphere that circulates between the day side and night side, it's unclear if enough warmth will make it to the night side to keep water vapor transported there from freezing out as snow, rarely if ever to return to the day side. In effect, the night side could rob the day side of any water.

BP preparing "vigorously" for oil spill lawsuits (Reuters)
LONDON (Reuters) ? BP said it was preparing "vigorously" for lawsuits related to its Gulf of Mexico oil spill, which are due to start later this month, as it unveiled a rise in fourth-quarter earnings boosted by higher oil prices and one-off gains.
Chief Executive Bob Dudley said on Tuesday BP was ready to settle the approximate 600 civil lawsuits it faces from people in states as far away as South Carolina and Kentucky, as well as litigation from the government, on "fair and reasonable terms."
However, as the clock ticks to the February 27 start of hearings in New Orleans, he added BP was also ready to fight.
Alastair Syme, oil analyst at Citigroup, said he expected the case to go to trial.
BP, Europe's second-largest oil company by market value, lifted its estimate of the total cost of the United States' worst-ever offshore oil spill by $1.8 billion to $43 billion due to higher costs for shoreline clean up, which BP said was now largely complete, and a new $500 million charge for legal fees.
Some analysts think the final figure could be much higher. By contrast, BP's statement showed the company has valued the doomed Macondo prospect at just $400 million.
However, the company added that over $5 billion of contributions from its partners in the blown-out well, Anadarko Petroleum and Japan's Mitsui, meant it would be able to end its own payments into a $20 billion compensation fund in 2012, a year earlier than expected.
Underscoring its confidence, BP also increased its quarterly dividend to 8 cents a share from 7 cents, backed by strong cashflows due to higher oil price.
"It is a good sign of confidence in the improving operational performance," said Tony Shepard, oil analyst at Charles Stanley.
BP's 14 cents a share quarterly payout was cut at the height of the spill, and reintroduced at half that level in 2011.
The company's total bill for litigation costs related to the spill is now over $2 billion. Including plaintiffs' legal fees, the disaster is likely to represent one of the biggest pay days for attorneys.
OUTPUT FLAT, MORE CAPEX
BP said its replacement cost (RC) net profit rose 65 percent compared to the same period last year, to $7.61 billion in the quarter, boosted by a $4 billion contribution from Anadarko.
Stripping out one-offs, the result rose 14 percent to $4.99 billion, in line with an I/B/E/S consensus forecast of $4.89 billion. Rival Royal Dutch Shell Plc reported an 18 percent rise in underlying profits in the quarter while industry leader Exxon Mobil only managed a 2 percent rise.
Replacement cost profit excludes gains or losses related to changes in the value of fuel inventories and so is comparable with net income under U.S. accounting rules.
BP's muted increase was despite an unusually low tax rate, and a 26 percent rise in the Brent crude price in the quarter compared to the same period of 2010.
Lower production weighed on the result, with assets sales, in part to help pay for the oil spill, pushing output down to 3.49 million barrels of oil equivalent per day in the quarter.
Dudley said he expected output, excluding BP's Russian field, to be flat in 2012, despite investor hopes that BP's smaller asset base would facilitate higher growth.
Echoing a trend across the sector, BP said it was lifting its capital expenditure budget for 2012, as it invests more in exploration and production.
Some analysts have questioned whether the additional spending will generate the same returns oil giants like BP, Shell and Exxon have enjoyed in the past.
BP shares traded down 1.3 percent at 483 pence at 1040 GMT, lagging a 0.6 percent drop in the STOXX Europe 600 Oil and Gas index.

Toyota Q3 jumps, raises FY outlook on cost cuts, incentives (Reuters)
TOKYO (Reuters) ? Toyota Motor Corp reported a stronger-than-expected quarterly operating profit, shrugging off a firm yen and the damaging impact of flooding in Thailand, and raised its annual forecast, helped by cost cuts and Japanese government subsidies.
Widespread floods in Thailand late last year battered Toyota just as it was recovering from production lost to the earthquake in Japan in March. The floods cost Toyota 240,000 vehicles in lost output worldwide, dragging 2011 global sales down by 6 percent and allowing General Motors Co and Volkswagen AG to overtake it in global vehicle sales.
The yen's prolonged strength is also weighing on Toyota, which last year built 2.76 million cars in Japan, one third of Japan's total vehicle production. It exported 57 percent of that output, much of it at a loss.
Toyota raised its forecast for operating profit -- earnings from its core operations -- for the year to end-March to 270 billion yen ($3.52 billion) from a previous 200 billion yen. Consensus forecasts from 23 analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S are for 330.8 billion yen.
The company, which has a market value of $135 billion -- more than rivals Honda Motor Co Ltd, Nissan Motor Co Ltd and Suzuki Motor Corp combined -- now sees annual net profit, which includes earnings made in China, of 200 billion yen, up from the 180 billion yen it projected in early December, before Tokyo announced fresh consumer incentives to buy fuel-efficient cars.
Toyota should benefit significantly from the re-instatement of cash-for-clunkers subsidies and the extension of tax incentives on fuel-efficient cars, especially on hybrids and other cars that use new technologies. Its newest Aqua hybrid received orders equivalent to 10 times the sales target in its first month.
Toyota has forecast a 21 percent jump in sales this calendar year to a record 9.58 million vehicles, including subsidiaries Daihatsu Motor Co and Hino Motors Ltd. All its production plants, bar Thailand, are back in action.
"It's premature to talk about any (sales) trends by looking only at our performance from last year when we had all those natural disasters," Toyota President Akio Toyoda told reporters last week. "I would want Toyota to be measured on how we do this year, provided it's a peaceful one."

October-December operating profit jumped 51.1 percent to 149.7 billion yen ($1.95 billion) from a year earlier, well ahead of the average estimate of a small decline to 93.9 billion yen in a poll of nine analysts by Reuters.
Quarterly net profit slipped 13.5 percent to 80.9 billion yen.
Last week, Honda said its profits fell sharply, hit in part by a 6 yen fall in the dollar for the quarter. Nissan, Japan's No.2 automaker, reports on Wednesday.
With the dollar trading at 76-77 yen, Toyota's Achilles' heel remains its heavy exposure to Japan. It is scrambling to make its domestic factories more efficient to keep its promise of building at least 3 million vehicles a year at home.
A plan to return its Japan-based parent operations to break-even assumes a dollar rate of 85 yen.
Toyota shares have risen 28 percent since late-November and on Monday touched a 6-month high. Tokyo's main Topix index is up 10 percent over the same period, while Nissan has gained 16 percent and Honda 29 percent.
Ahead of the results on Tuesday, Toyota shares closed flat at 2,986 yen, and the Topix gained 0.4 percent.
